Choosing your Photography Style Part 1

About The Southern Social TX - Wedding magazine for Texas brides

I have met with more than a few couples in my time as a venue manager. When I first started, I was surprised and even slightly annoyed at how much the couple would cling to me for advice. It took me a few intense weddings to realize that they cling to us because they think we know it all. They believe that somewhere in a secret drawer of our desk, there is a Mary Poppins magic bag that holds all the keys to the perfect wedding. Spoiler alert! There is not. Though I never had all the secrets, I do know a thing or two, and I genuinely enjoyed sharing those little bits of knowledge with couples. My biggest nugget was, make photography a priority! It truly is the only thing that transcends the day.

Upon sharing this information, I would always receive the follow-up question, who do you recommend? This seems like an easy enough reference to give, but it is more complicated than that. I know that you need to know your style and budget before sending a DM to every photographer on Instagram. Most couples have no idea what they want for a photography style or know that they have options. My fascination with the industry has always been spurred by the creatives’ vision that makes up this diverse industry. There is something for everyone to help create their perfect day. Photography is such a big part of this. As I said, it is the only thing that you have to reflect on the day visually. It is through those images you will remember your day. They will hang in your home and will be seen by generations to come. The idea of this shoot came to me after having a few encounters with couples who believed they needed to pick their venue, colors, and even style around how they wanted the pictures to look. I also had a few who told me that they could not book with the respective venue because their photographer could not shoot our venue. That one always shocked me!

The truth is there are a lot of misconceptions about photography, from pricing to style. This shoot was inspired by our passion here at the Southern Social to educate couples. We want you to see how two artists with a camera could capture the same setting in two different ways. We wanted to showcase the two artistic styles for this: a natural light and airy style in contrast to a high drama fine art style. With one design and style dreamt up by Stephanie with Wedding Event Designs at one of the up and coming modern venues, we hoped to convey more than one way to capture your big day. Education and inspiration are essential!
